International Wing Chun Day recap

March 16, 2013; the third Saturday of March; International Wing Chun Day, in celebration, Wing Chun Gainesville hosted a free introductory workshop to help promote and share our knowledge of one of the most popular Chinese Martial Arts in the world.

We had a great turn out with quite a few new people who came out to see what we do and why we do it and some guests from another lineage of Wing Chun. We structured the workshop aimed at the novice or someone who may not have any experience with our particular lineage. The curriculum included some history, philosophy, concepts and fighting strategy as well as some good old fashion punching and kicking. The hour and a half was not nearly enough and we like all the attendees were want for more time to train.

In addition to our first timers we were pleased to welcome Sifu Justin Och of Lakeland, Florida as well as several of his students, who came up and spent the morning with us. In the true spirit of the day we were able to share, exchange and learn a little about the diversity between our two linages and approaches to the art of Wing Chun. It was a pleasure for us to be able to meet and share our mutual love for Wing Chun with such a skilled practitioner and Sifu. Additionally we plan to foster this new friendship with further exchanges to help solidify and strengthen Wing Chun in Florida. Find Sifu Justin Och's take here.

Overall, we feel that our, albeit short, workshop was a rousing success. We were able to introduce some new people to Wing Chun and we were able to connect and build new friendships in our diverse and growing Kung Fu family, exactly in keeping with the spirit of International Wing Chun Day. A special thanks to Sensei Keith Teller of Gainesville Dojo for letting us commandeer the majority of the school for the morning.
